Declaration of the Household Goods when moving to the U.S
When moving to the U.S you need to file form 6059B – Customs Declaration, which requires a complete list of inventory of all the goods you are importing.
Make a list of all the items you are carrying with you and approximate value of each item you bring with you.
You can categorize items below:
Furniture: tables, chairs, bedroom furniture, home office furniture, living room furniture, desks, lamps, mirrors etc.
Household Goods: rugs, linen, towels, bed sheets, picture frames, toys, strollers, radio, tvs’, fans, washers, dryers, collectibles etc.
Sports Equipment: weights, bicycles, skates, skis etc.
Kitchenware: pots, pans, chinaware, glassware, silverware, utensils etc.
Clothing: men’s clothing, women’s clothing, children clothing, infants clothing etc.
Books: books, calendars, personal records etc.
Tools of trade: computers, office desk, shredder, fax, telephone, tools etc.
Items that does not fall in any of the above category should be marked separately.
Make a good packing list and have a good count of all the items you plan to import.
If you plan on leaving some items for later pick up you need to fil out Form 3299 – this form is the declaration for the list of items for free entry of unaccompanied articles when you go back to pick them up later to bring them to the U.S
Do not leave valuable goods in Canada for an extended period of time as this can be considered a tie to Canada for income tax purposes.
